PREFACE
The present volume forms No.VI in the series of calendars to the Sessions Records of the County of Buckingham published by the authority of the Clerk of the Peace for the County. It is unlike all other volumes in so much as it is entirely restricted to the names of inhabitants over the age of 18 who held freehold, copyhold or leasehold lands within the county and by Act of Parliament were therefore compelled to take the Oaths of allegiance, supremacy and abjuration.
The rising of the Old Pretender had demonstrated to the Government of the day the very real danger which existed from the supporters of the House of Stuart.
Every person taking this oath before the justices of the peace was given a certificate to that effect, signed by the Clerk of the Peace. A sample of such a certificate is preserved in the Aylesbury Museum and a facsimile of it, is given as a frontispiece to this volume.
On appearance before the justices every oath-taker had to sign or make his mark - if illiterate - on the oath roll. The rolls were then transcribed into the Sessions Book.
The list appearing in the Sessions Book may be accepted as complete, but the copying clerk had made careless mistakes which have become obvious in checking the enrolled copy with the original oath rolls. Unfortunately the original oath rolls are not complete, and consequently the entry in the Sessions Record has had to be accepted in these cases.
While nearly all counties in England possess some oath rolls and some registers, it is believed that those for Buckinghamshire are far more complete than those for any other county.
The following list, which for convenience sake has been arranged in alphabetical order recording nearly 8,000 names, may be taken as a directory of the county for the year 1723.
In addition to the oath-takers there were those whose religious principles forbade them from taking oaths - i.e. the Quakers. The followers of this sect were allowed by Act of Parliament to “affirm” instead of taking the Oath. The list of these contains 117 names. It is interesting to note that among the ordinary oath-takers the number of literates equalled the number of illiterates, while among the Quakers there were only 23 who were unable to sign their name.

The third list introduced in this volume contains the register of Roman Catholics who were compelled by Act of Parliament to register their estates. This registration provides some important details of estates, as it gives field names and other valuable details. The Register covers a far longer period i.e. 1717-1748. It contains in all the names of 61 Roman Catholics who held property within the county, though many of them did not reside on their estates. This register is indexed.
Unfortunately the occupations of the oath-takers are seldom given except in the case of the clorgy and of the medical profession. We find William Beasley, Rector of Cheddington; Annabella Bridges, wife of the Rector of Amersham; Mary, wife of Devereux Gooding, Rector of Fawley and Thomas Wagstaffe, Rector of Cublington. Thomas Barton is described as a surgeon of Newport Pagnell and Benjamin Waller a Doctor of Medicine of the same place. William Hobbs was an apothecary of Winslow. Then we find Thomas Busby LL.D., Peter Waldo and William Quarles, all professors of theology.
Jonas Besouth was the chief constable of Stoke.
Many titled persons are mentioned:- Viscountess Cobham, Hon. Anne Egerton, Mary Viscountess Kilmorey, Lady Elizabeth Lee of Hartwell, Lady Anne Montague, Hon. Elizabeth Verney and Lady Elizabeth Pinfold. Sir James Etheridge, Sir John Guise and Sir Charles Napier are mentioned as are Alexander Denton, one of the Justices of the Common Pleas, and Ferdinand Shrimpton, Mayor of High Wycombe. Catherine Boughton and Dorothy Brown are mentioned as ladies of the Manor of Turweston and High Wycombe respectively.
Three persons, William Russell the elder, William Russell the younger and Robert Streame were all prisoners in Aylesbury Gaol when they took the oath.
When one considers the fashion for wealthy citizens of London to purchase estates in the country, it is perhaps remarkable that Leonard Peade, a clothworker in the Poultry, is the only citizen of London mentioned.
The fashion for using more than one Christian name did not come into vogue until the next century, but two instances are found in these lists i.e. John Thurloe Brace and the Rev. Thomas Harding Rowland.
It had been the custom during the period immediately preceding the Commonwealth to invent the most astonishing puritanical Christian names, and one would have thought that some of these might have survived, but that is not the case and most of the Christian names found in these lists are of the most ordinary. Perhaps the female names are the most noticeable:- Damaris (Churchill); Pleasance (Dawney and Walker); Carola (Hill); Adeliza (Holton); Tabitha (Leverett); Valentina (Moore); Melony (Ring); Atholia (Robinson); Anstricia (Russell); Bathsneba (Styles); Marcia (Taylor) and Estelle (Warren).
Of the male names we find True (Blew); Sextus (Cooke and Tompkins); Zebulon (Hawkins); Hipwell (Lamborne); Mordecai (Partridge) and Noah (Pitcher).

Of the surnames it is remarkable that while there are 98 Smiths mentioned, there are only 16 Jones. There are 78 Clarks, 70 Stevens and roughly 40 Browns, Hardings, Hills and Kings.
I cannot close this preface without expressing my appreciation to Mrs. Sansome for the manner in which she has marshalled these names together.
My thanks are due to the General Purposes Committee of the County Council and the Clerk of the Peace for the sympathetic manner in which they have dealt with my difficulties.
