Just in case you needed any more evidence that the Haddenham Murder Mystery was a complete success, here are some quotes.
From Linda and Mike Axford, Haddenham Players regulars and cast members: "Well done Margaret... you have certainly made History. Your family must be very proud of you. Now take a breath and have a rest - you deserve it. Many thanks for the privilege of being part of it."
From Bob Walker and Di Skipper, visitors from Leicester: "Margaret, words fail us in trying to express our admiration for your wonderful production of the Murder Mystery of 1828. It was simply superb, and Di is still worried in case she got her vote wrong!"
From Mike Stephens, the film-maker: "I thought everyone did a fantastic job and it was such a great atmosphere and a pleasure to meet such really nice people."
Last but certainly not least, from a member of the audience and Haddenham resident, Lady Cynthia Floud said: "I am writing to congratulate you wholeheartedly for such a successful authorial debut. Your rendering of the murder was so good, so gripping and so very authentic. I shall treasure the sight and sound of your 19th century witnesses; they were straight out of a courtroom and they looked so good too. I sincerely hope the play will be revived, whether in Haddenham, Thame or the wider stage it thoroughly deserves."
Hear, hear.
The Haddenham Murder Mystery was performed on Thursday 2nd, Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th July. Though the last night clashed with the Beer Festival, we were a complete sellout!
Margaret Watkins did an amazing job of pulling it all together, from writing the play based on Alan Rose's research, directing all the actors and organising all the crew. It went so smoothly and was a delight to act in. Tom Bucknell's Tithe Barn was also such an atmospheric venue.
As far as I know, the audience seemed to like it, too. There were many comments on the professionalism of the film at the start, produced by Mike Stephens. The audience also found the evidence in the play intriguing and were very serious about deciding whether the accused were guilty or not. We had two different outcomes over the three nights.
Sorry to all those who couldn't get tickets, a DVD of the whole show will soon be available from Haddenham Museum.
