'Illegal Dumping Costs', is a County-wide anti fly-tipping campaign, which was officially launched at the beginning of November 2003.

The campaign aims to reduce the amount of illegal dumping in Buckinghamshire (often referred to as fly-tipping) and is being delivered by the Waste Partnership for Buckinghamshire. The Waste Partnership for Buckinghamshire consists of Bucks County Council, Aylesbury Vale, Chiltern, South Bucks and Wycombe District Council.

Illegal Dumping Costs

There are a number of 'costs' associated with illegal dumping - for instance fly-tipping is a major problem in Buckinghamshire and cost the local authorities £500,000 last year in taxpayers money. There is the 'cost' to the environment - the rubbish is unsightly, degrading and can be harmful to children, pets and wildlife. There is also a 'cost' for the person caught illegally dumping rubbish - they can be fined up to £50,000, be imprisoned and get a criminal record. In the first 5 years of the campaign, 110 offenders were convicted and ordered to pay over £150,000 in fines and costs.  Flytipping is now an arrestable offence.

CCTV operates to catch dumpers in action

In support of this awareness-raising campaign, covert video surveillance is operating at a number of sites across the County, helping to ensure that those people who continue to dump rubbish illegally can be prosecuted. Warning signs are on display at all sites where rubbish is regularly dumped, advising offenders of where they can find information about authorised disposal sites.

As well as reducing the amount of rubbish being dumped, householders and traders are being advised of where authorised waste sites are located in the County. Residents are also being informed of the questions that should to be asked when they pay a trader to dispose of their rubbish.
