Guides awarded Baden Powell Award
John Bercow, MP for Buckingham presented 3 girls from Ivinghoe & Pitstone Guide Unit
with the highest badge for Guides – the Baden-Powell Challenge Award at a ceremony on Monday 4 June.
The 3 girls, Rebecca Ashton, Alex Loose and Grace Witherdon had to complete a number of tasks and challenges, under the headings:
• Healthy Lifestyles – promoting physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
• Global Awareness – increasing awareness of global issues.
• Discovery – challenging Guides to participate in a new experience.
• Skills and Relationships – developing the girls’ self-confidence and self-worth.
• Celebrating Diversity – increasing awareness of rights and responsibilities for all.
The girls organised a quiz and a sports competition for other guides in their unit, helped serve teas at the Pitstone festival, and ran stalls at the Ivinghoe summer fete. They found out about fair trade and shared their findings with their fellow guides by organising a fair-trade food tasting event.
The girls leader, Jane Henstock, said
“All three girls said their favourite challenge had been sleeping in a bivouac - a shelter made from groundsheet - and cooking their breakfast on an open fire the following morning. They worked hard and we were really pleased that John Bercow was able to join us to celebrate their success.”
