I went to a Chocolate and Wine tasting at Downley, given by a member of the Uxbridge Wine Society - a club for wine tasting. This attempted to match dessert wines and pure (dark) chocolate bars. Not an easy task, and I have to confess that I found the "citrus" flavours in chocolate to be more ephemeral that in wine, but nevertheless a very interesting talk. A surprising fact about chocolate is that it contains 1g per kilo of a similar anti-oxidant to that found in red wine, and is good for your heart and lungs and all those other bits that seem to go wrong in later life. Most of all, however, I found the Downley club members welcoming and very friendly, and the club has a wonderful atmosphere, so we enjoyed ourselves enormously. Certainly worth a visit if you have the right day free.
Well, the weather put paid to February's meeting, I'm afraid. Not just the snow and the ice, but the heating in Liston Hall broke down the day before the meet, so it was cancelled at the last moment. No-one wants to sit in a freezing hall for two hours. On a happier note, the website has attracted some potential new members, and also offers for future wine tastings and talks. Happy days! Keep smiling and keep drinking (but only in moderation, of course!)
Another New Year's Eve Party, and another great time had by all!! 49 members and guests wanted to come, but unfortunately illness kept half-a-dozen in bed, including the chairman. The rest of us had a fantaaaaastic time! The food was the best we have had, the disco was great, and everyone really let their hair down and danced the night away. And at the end, it was impressive how so many mucked in and helped clean up the hall - a real team spirit. Thanks everyone! A great way to finish the old year and welcome in the new.
