What an Interesting Bunch We Had!

  • Introduction by Annette Brooke, MP - Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Children & Families.  Annette has been an MP for Mid Dorset & Poole North since June 2001.
  • Celia Brackenridge - Professor of Sports Science, School of Sport & Education, Brunel University.  Celia started as a physical education teacher in schools and universities before running her own research company and working for Brunel.  She is a former captain of the England & Gt. Britain Women's Lacrosse teams; a World Cup Coach and a BASES Accredited Interdisciplinary Sport Science Researcher as well as writing and publishing several books on child welfare in sport.  What has sport got in common with performances you may ask? Quite a lot as Celia explained.  They all involve: vast numbers of children, armies of parents/carers & volunteers, emotional intensity, physical demands and require safeguarding. A thoroughly rivetting insight into the similarities between children in sport and children who perform. 
  • Steve Write, Principal Licensing Officer, Bournemouth Borough Council - responsible for licensed premises under the Licensing Act 2003 together with Public Carriage Vehicles (taxis etc), Street Trading, Lotteries, Gaming Act and Sex Shops.  All areas which may involve working children. 
  • John Gill - Legal & Administrative Manage Isle of Man Dept. Education where he acts as Secretary to the Dept. of Education & Advisor to the Minister & Members of the Dept.  Also responsible for the Education Liaison Officers who look after the welfare of young people.  John is activively involved in drafting the current IOM Employment of Children regulations. 
  • Anne Brogan - Executive Producer of Children's programmes ITV - Ann was originally a primary school teacher in Inner London and has worked for Thames TV, BBC, Disney Internation and now ITV.  ITV in conjunction with the NNCEE have produced a video "Every Child Matters" Even When They Are At Work.  The Conference delegates had the first viewing.  This video will be cascaded around the country - LAs, relevant organisations from Spring 2008 - Watch this Space! 
  • Ian Smith - Television Workshop Director ITV - originally Head of Drama at several Nottingham comprehensive schools and the director of the Nottingham Workshop for 19 years.  He has written a piece performed at the children's Baftas and co-written episodes of CITV's Dangerville.He initiated the London Showcases for Workshop members liaising with; drama schools, agents and casting directors - occasionally performs himself in TV, film and theatre.  Ian is also actively involved in the new video.

  • Anne Marie Hamilton - National Farmers Union - Farmers daughter, wife and runs the family farming business.  She trained as a farm secretary  and farm training.  Actively involved in two national campaigns with the Health & Safety Executive to promote Child Safety on farms.  Founder member of Cambs Rural Support Group of which she is Chair and Trustee.  Currently seconded to the Agriculture Development, Eastern Region and also represents the NHS Confederation, East of England Rural Forum. 
  • Sue Colley Cert Ed. BHSI.BE Coach, British Horse Society - Initially a teacher before achieving her BHSI qualification.  Built up a successful Equestrian Centre, competed a number of horses to international level.  Her main focus now is as a British eventing coach and training young riders in the sport of eventing.  Sue is also an assessor for the BHS and a member of the Riding Schools Advisory Group. 
  • Judi Hayfield - Casting & Drama Consultant, ITV Productions - ITV Casting Director from 1967 to 2005 working in Manchester and London with a large portfolio of TV shows under her belt.  She is now working with ITV as a Consultant for casting & business affairs.  Judi is also actively involved in the new video. 
  • Carolyn Hamilton - Children's Legal Centre - Professor of Law at the University of Essex and Director of the Children's Legal Centre as well as a practising barrister.  She is the author of a numbe of books and articles on child law and children's rights and works to promote children's rights both in the UK and abroad.  Carolyn has worked with the TUC and NSPCC on issues of child employment and is the author of 'Too Much Too Soon' as well as undertaking research on international law relating to child employment and the implementation of intrnational standards in the child employment laws in England. 
  • Paul Beckwih Smith, Head of Enforcement with the Gangmasters Licensing Authority - Paul managers a team of 20 investigators, all of whom have experience of investigating with Police Forces or other Govn. Agencies.  Other areas he has been involved in are: Inland Revnue Special Compliance Office, investigations into large scale fraud, some involving the illegal trafficking of humans (including children) from mainland China to the UK and Inland Revenue fraud.

WORKSHOPS

We wanted to go to All of Them!

  • Section 559 Education Act 1996 - Ian Hart Surrey County Council.  This workshop was aimed at helping LA officers to use a company's records to establish evidence of breaches of Child Employment law, and use this evidence to pursue a prosecution.  Scenario based information to aid practical learning, PACE, Human Rights Act 1968 and Prosecutions - clear & concise information on the legalities. 
  • Approved Bodies for Performances - Marilyn Earl Hampshire County Council.  This workshop was aimed at helping LAs provide a criteria when granting Approved Body status to organisations.  Aimed at focusing on opening up discussions with LA Legal Depts. and sharing good working practice across LAs. 
  • Troubleshooting - Margaret Smith Suffolk County Council.  This workshop was about sharing experiences and seeking information on topics chosen by delegates in dealing with daily situations in the filed of child employment & entertainment.  Information giving & interactive discussions. 
  • Working with Horses - Sue Colley British Horse Society.  This workshop was aimed at explaining the tasks (aided by props) children may be require to undertake when working with horses.  The difference between Riding Establishments (licensed) and Livery Yards (not licensed) - The Animal Welfare Bill is due to address the lilcensing of Livery Yards.  The appropriate management of those responsible for children working with horses and ponies. 
  • Importing & Exporting Children in Performances - Gwen Medd Buckinghamshrie County Council; Wendy Smith East Sussex County Council & Pamela Gagliardi City of Westminster Magistrates Court.  This practical workshop, presented through roleplay, information giving and discussion, aimed to give an insight into the often confusing legal requirements involved for productions and LAs when UK children perform abroad and when non-UK children perform in the UK
