Every Child Matters - Even when at work

On the 20th November the National Network for Children in Employment and Entertainment (NNCEE) launched a dvd at The House of Lords highlighting the need for an urgent review of current Child Employment legislation to ensure children are protected from working illegally and in dangerous conditions.

Roach

Produced with support from ITV the dvd shows children, and popular child actors from Coronation Street and Emmerdale, enjoying both the freedom and opportunities part-time work allows but also the tragedies that can occur when Child Employment law is unknown or not applied.

Using real life stories of a 14 year old boy seriously injured while at work and a young boy killed while doing his paper round, the film highlights the desperate need to change the laws surrounding the employment of children in part-time work and the entertainment industry so that it can be a positive experience for all.

What do we want to see change?

  • The Better Regulation Committee recommendation should form a starting point for a review of the existing legislation.
  • An update in legislation.  200 pieces of legislation is unworkable.  A single piece of legislation would create clarity.  The removal of byelaws would increase consistency across the country, removing the need for companies operating in more than one area to check local byelaws.
  • A sustained national awareness campaign would educate both young people and their parents or carers and employers about their rights and responsibilities.
  • One child hurt while at work is one child too many.
