We are a flat green bowling club - with a first class green and an excellent clubhouse.
Last year, the member's of Princes Risborough Bowls Club celebrated their club's 75tth anniversary. In the early 1930’s, a few local businessmen decided to build a bowling green for their own personal use in a meadow just off what was then called Back Lane. It attracted a wide interest in the village and so they decided to hold a public meeting with the intention of forming a club. At that meeting, the East family who owned the land gave conditional permission for its use for an annual rent of £20. They agreed an added incentive that should a club be formed it would be given the option to purchase the land. So it was, on 6th May 1936, with Mr R East as President of its management committee, our club was formed. It now ranks amongst the best in the County with a playing membership numbering over 120. Social membership has grown to around 50, and is made up of people all with strong connections to the club - such as the families of playing members. The Club is situated in a convenient spot close to the centre of the town yet its air of quiet seclusion is a delight to be experienced on a warm summer evening
We continue to develop a well-established fixtures card. Our aim is to provide a balanced mix of matches designed to present opportunities for bowlers of all abilities. The Club puts teams out to compete in most of the National Competitions including the prestigious men’s Bucks Cup and the ladies’ Trundell Trophy. In addition, we have an extensive programme of internal club competitions culminating in a Finals Weekend, which takes place in mid September.
Those who enjoy a relatively relaxed approach to their bowling but want a good competitive game in an atmosphere of friendly rivalry, turn up for Tuesday Afternoon Triples. There are many more opportunities for social bowling including the very popular Club Days. The outdoor bowling season is brought to a lively end, when throughout September we run a mixed triples league.
During the winter months, the clubhouse is put to good use by the staging of social events including monthly bingo sessions, quiz nights, race nights and organised trips to West End theatres. We can usually look forward to some form of Christmas celebration.
Being a member owned club, we rely heavily on members giving some of their time towards providing the considerable resource needed to fulfill all of the management functions, maintain the green and surrounds, run the bar and keep the clubhouse clean.
We believe that membership brings with it an obligation on each to contribute towards the continued well-being of the club by the giving of their services in which ever way thought most appropriate. The Club is firmly of the view that this is a reasonable expectation and its management committee endeavours to ensure that as far as possible, every person who is fit and has the ability does fulfil that obligation by either volunteering for at least one active role or by accepting an allocated task.
If you want to make an arrangement to come along to an open day, or simply to find out more, contact the Club Secretary Neil Perry, on 01844 346679 who will be pleased to help or if you prefer a chance visit to the clubhouse and green – you will find us off New Road, at the end of the private road immediately opposite Risborough Coachworks
Club membership is open to all over the age of 10 yrs and includes bowlers from the length and breadth of Buckinghamshire. In addition to seasoned bowlers, we particularly welcome novices into the Club and take great care to ensure that they are looked after.
Outdoor bowling starts in mid April, and during the early part of each season, we invite the public along to our “Open Days” when our club members and bowling instructors can be on hand to provide a welcome. While potential members are making their minds up about joining what might be for them, a new sport, we keep their costs down with an induction package which includes free training given by qualified instructors and the use of suitable footwear and bowls. If they so wish, we nominate a mentor to steer them through their first season of outdoor bowling
Full membership can be enjoyed for a moderately priced annual subscription, which equates to less than the cost of a weekly pint of beer. We also offer a concessionary rate to juniors and persons in full time education.
