Rescue Recipe Cookbook
In 2009 the Rethink Rubbish at School waste education programme has spread the Love Food Hate Waste message through the ‘Rescue Recipe Cookbook’ competition. The aim of the competition was to write a cookbook that will help stop perfectly good food going to landfill by providing recipes, written by 5 – 16yr olds from Buckinghamshire, that use up food which might otherwise have been thrown away, such as leftovers and food that might go off or out of date quickly. A second part to the competition was to design an image for the front cover of the cookbook that encourages people not to throw away or waste food. Inundated with over 190 entries from across the county, 4 winning designs and 24 winning recipes were selected based on the most creative and best use of leftover, rotter and use-by ingredients to form the cookbook. The winners and their families were invited to a cooking event at Chestnut Lane Infant School where they could try their hand at making a selection of the recipes and learn more about composting and food waste minimisation.
