Notices for Members

Important - if you pay your membership fees by standing order

Haddenham U3A has recently transferred its bank account from Alliance and Leicester (Santander) to CAF Bank. CAF is Charities Aid Foundation and they provide services, including banking facilities, for charities. If you pay by standing order, it will be necessary for you to advise your bank of our new details.

To make this as easy as possible for you, we will provide you with a form or you can print one here. Please complete it with your bank details and signature. Rather than forwarding the form directly to your bank, please return it to our Treasurer, Kevin Nash or to any member of the committee. We ask you to do this so that we can ensure that all those with a standing order have amended their details and no monies are remitted to our old account.

Thank you

French Conversation for the New Year

Carol Mason has been making progress towards setting up a French Conversation Group. She is currently in discussions with a view to coming up with a format for an intermediate group and an advanced group. Look out for an announcement in January. But in the meantime, if this is of interest to you, please let Carol or Hilary know  mason.carol16@gmail.com or es@eskipsey.plus.com

Painting and Art Group closes

With the numbers of members within this group diminishing to 2-3, Katie Loveday feels that the group has run its course and it is time to pack up.

Our heartfelt thanks go to Katie for the 11 years she has run the group, including using her home for the regular monthly painting sessions.

We know there is quite an interest in painting and art within our area, as evidenced by the local success of Bucks Art week each year. Katie is happy for a new group to be formed, but without her personal involvement. If anyone is interested in starting up a new Painting and Art Group, please speak with Hilary Skipsey (290464)

Possible New Interest Groups

There are a number of ideas for new Interest Groups which are floating around. Such ideas invariably come from the U3A membership, and the Committee tries to judge which have sufficient interest to enable a new group to be formed. Some ideas are close to fruition, some are at the early stages of consideration. Some require a leader with some expertise in the subject.

Among the current set of ideas under consideration are:

  • French Conversation

  • Archaeology group

  • Theatre group

  •  Theology group
  • Geology group

  • Textile group

If you may be interested in joining one or more of these groups, please let the Groups Co-ordinator Hilary Skipsey know, by telephone (290464) or dropping her a note (5 Willow Rise, Haddenham)

 First U3A Christmas Concert

The national U3A organisation, The Third Age Trust, is putting on the first Christmas Concert specifically for U3A members. It will take place in the Church of St John's, Waterloo on Wednesday 14th December 2011 from 14.30 - 16.30hrs. The programme, performed by the MOSAIC Chamber Choir and the Brandenburg Brass and Organ, will consist of traditional carols and works by Bach, Bruckner and Holst.

We are NOT organising an official trip to this event, but it is open to any members who wish to go to make their own arrangements. Tickets cost £16 per person including mulled wine and mince pies, and are available from the Third Age Trust.

Thame River Project

Following the example of the TVN Thames Riverside Project, our local CHATT group (Chinnor, Haddenham and the two Thame U3As) have instituted a "Thame River Project" which members may find more easy and amenable to participate in. Three groups have been formed covering Walks, History and Natural History. The project will run until September 2012 when there will be a presentation at each U3A and a talk in Thame Museum.  The Haddenham contact point for the project is Alan Rose (01844 291004 alanrose524@googlemail.com). Please try to get involved.

Adopt a Lock

One of the initiatives under the TVN Riverside Project has been "Adopt a Lock".  It is open to any TVN U3A group or individual to select a lock to study, with the resulting report to be collected together by TVN.

Haddenham U3A has adopted the Old Windsor lock and the Bell Weir lock with the area between. The area is of historical significance with Bell Weir close to Runnymede and its three important memorials.

A group led by Hilary Skipsey has undertaken the walk between the locks, and Hilary has submitted a write-up with photos to TVN. You can access and download the writeup by clicking HERE.

TVN Riverside Journal

The latest version of the newsletter of the Riverside Project has now been published. It shows the details of the various project activities planned for the coming year.

Get Fit, Avoid Falls

Falls are very common in older people. One in three over 65 year olds will fall in any one year. Among the over 80s that rises to one in two! While some falls are unavoidable, many can be prevented. Falling is not an inevitable result of growing older. Reduced strength, balance and speed of reaction may turn a slip, trip or stumble into a fall.

Research shows that for many people who are at high rsik of falling, one of the most effective interventions is strength and balance training. The "Get Fit, Avoid Falls" programme is designed to help people over 60 living in Bucks improve their strength and balance in a friendly group setting. Programmes are run in leisure or community centres across the county.

Our nearest centres are Aqua Vale Fitness Centre in Aylesbury and the Princes Risborough Community Centre. A leaflet with further details can be seen by clicking here.
