Hello,
Can anybody help! I am trying to research my husbands side of the
family - HOUNSLOW . I have found from his fathers birth certificate
that my husbands grand father was born in Wing about 1866. His name
was Emanuel HOUNSLOW, but I have come to a stop. Looking at your
parish records on the web I can find no reference to him. If anyone
could help I would appreciate it.Regards christine hounslow (February 2010)
I wonder if you could put the following on your 'Wing' website please.
Interested in any information relating to a Wellington bomber that crashed during the night at Hurdlesgrove near Whitchurch around 1943 - 1945. The plane, believed to be from RAF Wing was apparently on a training mission, clipped the top of some tall trees and hit the ground heavily. A farmer and his staff managed to get the crew out all of whom survived. They are believed to have been a Canadian crew. Any information would be most welcome. Many thanks Peter (May2008) Please reply to wingit@talk21.com
Hi,
Last Sunday someone from the church kindly showed us round the church and crypt.
There are a couple of photos I have put up on Panoramio and will probably arrive on Google Earth in due course.
Hit this link and it should lead you there. http://www.panoramio.com/user/599368

Hi Alan, I noticed a message you had posted on a web site about a Pantling who served in Italy around 1942-1944. My father served in Italy during that time, but he was in the U.S. Army Air Corp as a bombadier... James C. Pantling. I suspect this is not the person you are looking for since you had mentioned the Queen's Royal Regiment. I've done considerable research on the Pantling family, and would be happy to offer any assistance. I have military service information on a very small few, but have doubts we would be able to make a match without more information from you. Do you have a first name? A town where he might be from, etc.? Any info you could provide would be helpful. I have yet to find a Pantling that isn't related... even if rather distantly. I've worked closely with a Martin Pantling in England on the family's research, and perhaps one of us can help. Jim Pantling Sarasota, Florida (December 2007)
Re: George Whetstone
Please can you help me? I am researching my family tree and my husband’s family tree. My husband’s Great Grandmother was Annie Whetstone. Her gravestone in Hitchin/Letchworth refers to her being from Wing, she was born on 31st October 1872. I believe her father was George Whetstone who married Ann Bandy (daughter of Zebedee and Catherine). I have searched all over the internet including all information on Genesreunited to find out when they were married. I am now beginning to think that Ann Bandy was not Annie’s mother but step-mother because Annie ended up living with her aunt and uncle in Hertfordshire by 1881 and Ann Bandy was still listed as living with her parents in the 1871 census.. George died I believe in Wing on 22nd December 1874 and was born I believe in Hertfordshire in about 1843. I was wondering if there was any information on the burial records which may help me. Maybe he had been widowed himself and she is in the same grave as him – a name that keeps cropping up in my searches is Rachel Ann Crowley (but she died in 1871 according to records)? He had another daughter who was a baby when he died and she died in March 1879. George’s death certificate named him as Weston not Whetstone.
Thank you for your time.

My Mum’s cousin Victor North and his wife Isabel lived (somewhere) in Wing from the early 50s and through the 60s. Could anyone tell me where they lived, please. An Aunt thinks it was a house set back from the road that may have been called “Otterley House”? Victor North was a tea importer. Any information would be fantastic. Thank you, Beverley Cover in Burcott. (July 2007)
Good afternoon.
I have just clicked onto your website and saw the note posted by Mr Tregartha about the cast iron chimney in his house bearing the makers name "L Denchfield".
I have been researching the family name and history for a while and am meaning to visit Wing and some of the other villages in the area where the family had quite a presence for many years, including Burcott.I will have a look at my records to check who is most likely to have made the chimney but my first reaction is that it might have been Levi Denchfield.
Kind regards,Chris Denchfield. (May 2007)
I have begun tracing back my father's side of the family and have known about a Wing connection for some time - but not had time to follow up until now.
My great, great, grandfather was James Paine, of Wing Berry (Wingbury) born c.1791. An extract from his will is available online from a couple of sources. My line of descent is through Edwin Paine, who married Mary Ann (Gates?) and his son Ellice. Both were members of the clergy and this tradition was continued by my uncle, Peter Paine (christened Otto) who was active in Frieston, Lincs for many years.
I believe either Edwin or Ellice may have clerical links with Wing Chuch
If anyone can shed any light on Paines prior to James - or descendents of his still in the village/area I would be most grateful. I know my father kept in touch with a relative called Margaret but am unsure of surname or indeed if she was resident in Wing area. Also curious about Noah, James' eldest son, who has proved very hard to track so far. Thank you S M Paine (May 2007)

Hi Today 10th March I visited your village my ancestors were called Woodman they were born in Wing about 1766. I found a table top tomb under the large tree in the graveyard with alot of Woodmans listed on it, whilst there a woman spoke to us and told me there was a plague in the early 1800's were can I find a history of the Village and can you tell me what the plague was, smallpox? I have visited your website and its very interesting as my family name is Rogers and there are Rogers children in the school photo. Thank you Penny Bulpitt (March 2007)
By the way, I just had a look around the site at the history notes and noticed the entries for the Denchfields. We live at 5-7 High street in Burcott, which was the old bakery. In one of our living rooms, which I suspect was originally the actual bakery, we have a remnant of the original bakers oven, a cast iron chimney piece with the words ‘L. Denchfield, Maker Wing, Bucks’ Nothing else exists of the oven but the panel is in clear view. Perhaps, if this isn’t known already, this could be forwarded to whoever is collating the Denchfield history.

A story researched by Vic Syrett
Early in 1941 the Leighton Buzzard, Linslade and Wing Spitfire Rural Fund started raising money to subsidise the building of a Spitfire fighter. In June 1941 Spitfire Mark V, number AD556, was presented to the Ministry of Defence and named 'The Buzzard'. She was taken on charge at 24 Maintainance Unit at Ternhill, in Shropshire, on 26 October 1941 - only to suffer minor damage some two days later. After being repaired on site she was taken back to 19 Squadron at RAF Ludham, Norfolk.
On 23 April 1942 Lt. B Fuchs landed too fast and hit the ground with her propellor. The prop went back to De Havilland. Various repairs and transfers later, she ended up at RAF Benson, Oxfordshire, where she was converted into a photographic reconaissance MK XIII Spitfire, then allocated to 543 Squadron at RAF Benson.
On 26 October she was returned to Brize Norton before being alloted to 400 Royal Canadian Air Force Squadron for more photographic work. She was eventually struck off charge on 17 February 1945 - having virtually lasted thoughout all major phases of the war. (November 2006)
I was wondering if you could help me try and get in touch with Richard Corkett who recently posted some photos etc on your website. I am currently trying to trace my family tree and have some details regarding relations in Wing/Cheddington/Ivinghoe but mainly the Soulbury area and would love to try and tie them all together. I would be eternally greatful if you could pass on my email and address. Kind regards Sharon (November 2006)

Hi there, Rachel.
I searched for Moses and his siblings while I was trying to work out whether the family was related to my g-g-grandmother Ann Syrett (thanks, Kathie, for the info there).
Moses is to be found before 1891, but you need to look for variant spellings of the surname. It's sometimes spelt Syratt, sometimes Syrett, or even Sirriett.
I visited Wing churchyard a couple of years ago and found that there are various spellings on the different family gravestones, so they never did agree even among themselves!
Good luck with the search.

Fountaines of Wing
Hi my name is Kathie, I have just found your notice boards and am amazed to find family members with the same great grandfather as myself. Abel Fountaine b. wing 1862. parents David Fountaine b. 1823 and Ann Syrett b. 1826 both of Wing. Abels wife Jane Major was born Leighton Buzzard 1863 parents George Major and Sarah Pratt. The couple were married in Wing on 27. May 1883. Their daughter Rose born in Leighton Buzzard was infact my grandmother. The family moved to Watford, Hertfordshire around 1901. My grandmother aways told me that one of her brothers emigrated and now thanks To Gregs notice on your board, I know which one and like Lisa would love to know more about that side of the family. With regards to Lisa's questions, Ann Syrett (Abels wife) was the illigitimate daughter of Susanna Syrett b. 1803 Wing, parents John Syrett and Ann Munday. The John Syrett husband to Maria that Lisa mentions in her e-mail was infact Susanna Syretts brother and I think I'm right in saying their brother George was the father of William who you mentioned, ended up in Aylesbury jail but so I believe, did Father George.
There is so much to tell but too much at one time can become confusing but now I have found family ties, hope you will get in touch and many thanks to the notice board for bringing us together. Regards. Kathie Flaherty, Watford, Hertfordshire. (October 2006)

Having recently discovered and enjoyed this site, I thought I might post this on the notice board to jog some memories. Hello, what a brilliant time I have had reading about the residents of Wing in bygone days.
My Father John Brand was born in Wing along with his brother Ted and sisters Ginny and Dorothy. My Dad met my mother when she, a young divorcee was evacuated to Wing during WW 2. She had a young son Billy, my half brother, pictured with his tin hat on, of which he would not go any where without. My mother worked at Burcott Lodge with Dorothy and I think she introduced her to my Dad. They were in service to a russian, Mr Berger and his wife Nina. I am trying to trace my family tree, and am very keen to correspond with anyone who has information or knowledge of the Brand family or linked families Jordan, Scolpher, Shearsby and more recently Kirby hope the photos are of interest to you - click here

Dear Sir/madame,
i am researching arcraft crashes in Shropshire during the secnd world war and one of the pilots was a Alfred Stewart Smith. I have searched the internet looking for information on this pilto and came to the forum on your village website. I was interested to read that there are still family of this man living in the village? Mrs Wrenshaw?
I was wondering if it would be possible to be put in contact with her as i would be interested in talking.
The incident in wich he was involved was on the 9th August 1941 when his aircraft, a Master had to force land in a field at Church Fenton, Shropshire. The undercarriage collapsed and the pilot was slightly injured. Sadly, this pilot went on to be killed later in the war.
Yours Sincerely, Tom (September 2006)
Hello my name is Rachel and I am related to the Syratt Family of Burcott.
My Great Great Grandfather was William Syratt DOB 1858, who spent time in Aylesbury Gaol, and lucky for me, unlucky for him! his prison record actually contains a photograph of him. I am wondering if anyone can enlighten me regarding the Syratt family as I have drawn a blank regarding one family member.
Moses Syratt my Great Great Great Uncle, DOB 1838, appears to have had a career as a Police officer, as in the 1891 and 1901 census his occupation is noted as a 'Pensioned Police Man.' I am trying to locate which Force he served with, however on contacting Thames Valley Police they have no record of him. Also prior to 1891/1901 census' Moses simply disappears I can find no trace of him. If anyone can help me with this I would be eternally grateful, and any information given, however small regarding the 'Syratt family would be much appreciated. Many thanks Rachel

I have in my possession a postcard photograph of my Nan (aged about 12-14) believed to be taken in Wing during World War I
I have been told that she was evacuated to Wing in about 1915 from North London.
I am wondering whether you had come across any evidence of people being evacuated to Wing during the 1st World War ?

I am compiling a history of Wing in WW1, and have done most of the research including a database that includes over 200 men from Wing that served in the forces, with their units and details of wounds as well as deaths. If anyone has any information about servicemen in this period especially photos or letters could they please get in touch with me, or if they have any queries about members of their own families who served I will be happy to see if I can help. I have incidentaly found five men who died and are connected with Wing, who are not on the War Memorial. Michael Woodwards please email MJWOOD565@aol.com (February 2006)

Hello, discovered your website from wing-ops site. I have traced my grandmothers family back 250 years, most of the family and associated families came from Wing. I would love to hear from anybody with a connection.
The names are Pease, Randall, Irons, Roberts, Faulkner & Heady.
Love the site, gives a good idea of life in Wing.
I believe my ancestors lived in Church Row.
Keep up the good work.

thought you might be interested in the attached for the history site now under construction. Also, we have always believed the house to be built about 1840 but it is clear from the documents summarised that a baker owned the property as far back as 1799 and we wonder if any local historians could shed light on what might have been here before. Congratulations on a really wonderful website for what is a small (at least it was small in1945) village. I loved the surrounding countryside and during my short stay at the nearby RAF Station (No.26 OTU) I got to know several friendly people including the then vicar whose name I've been trying to remember-was it the Rev. Crane?
You have brought back happy memories to an old man. Thank you.

I have just read through the 1841 census and found a Thomas Faulkner aged 15 counted in the Vicarage. I believe this is my great grandfather who came to Australia in 1850-
His father was John Faulkner according to his death cert. Unfortunately I cannot find any trace of a John Faulkner in the census. The only ref to a John Faulkner is John Faulkner born to Richard Faulkner & Mary Green He was christened in Wing about 30 Nov 1809- I don't know if he is the John Faulkner, father of Thomas. I don't know if you have any info that would help me but , if you do, I would really appreciate anything.

Alan,
A number of members of the Panting family are listed in the Leighton Buzzard directory (on the web). Leighton Buzzard is a town of about 20,000 people situated close to the village of Wing. I lived in both places 35 years ago and knew several Pantlings.

I'm researching my maternal grandmother's family, the Stuchbury's of Hillesden. My great-grandfather's uncle George Stuchbury is described as a "Wing pensioner" in the 1901 census, and I assume this is a connection with Wing village itself. I do know that he was a soldier who served in India during the Indian Mutiny in 1857, and subsequently in Ireland. If anyone in the village can shed any light on this curious phrase, I'd be grateful (not to mention enlightened!). If you've any info, you can contact me at: barnet55@ntlworld.com. Thanks! I have had success! Via via from the site I have been in touch with Mrs Ann Wrenshaw of Wing the sister of Fl. Lt. Smith (click here for original message). I had a message via her son and spoke yesterday on the telephone. It has been for me a long but very satisfying search. I attach a photograph of his grave. My thanks for playing such an important part in my search. Best wishes with your site and village, Eileen
I have recently come across an old photograph of people who lived in Wing, similar to those in Wing as it Was. The photograph is owned by a gentleman who lives in Northwood but says he is related to the Searles and the Woolheads. Although I have returned the sepia photo to it's owner I have copies available to anyone who is interested. Photo now in the gallery
Furthermore, about 18 months ago I was in contact with the a relative of the Black Smith in one of the photos in Wing as it Was, he was her grand father, Mrs Searle lived in Luton. All this by way of my job at Wiltshire Farm Foods (ex of Wing) now based in Stewkley
Can I send these photographs to anyone? Marjorie Goss LU7MJG@aol.com

Dear Ms. Glover:
I am interested in the following families: Hall, Turner, Marsh. My kin from those families were in the Kershaw County, Lee County, South Carolina area. My Grandmother was Bessie Turner. Her mother was Mary Alice Hall who married Benjamin Pinkney Turner. Her father was Russell J. Hall (Confederate soldier) who married Lavinia Marsh. Any help on any of these families would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Son in Law of Alfred Smith,
I saw your message on the Wing village and site where I had also placed a plea for help! This will probably just be coincidence but I am searching for family from Alfred Stewart Smith born in Wing on 21 January 1914 and died in Zaltbommel, The Netherlands when his Typhoon aircraft was shot down on 1 January 1945. On Saturday of this week it will be 60 years since he died and I will place a wreath on his grave. I have been trying so hard to find relatives of him but Smith is not the most easiest of names to trace. The RAF have been helpful but actual addresses of next of kin are not allowed to be given. They gave me a hint to try writing to newspapers in the area of Hove or Luton but again I have had no response. I know that his wife died in 1988 in the Hove area. This may be yet another red herring but if this has any connection please let me know.
My best wishes for your searches and for 2005.
Eileen Hendrie
I attach a copy of the email I sent back in February of this year about the photograph of the church choir circa 1900. I had hoped that it might generate some interest. Richard Corkett (editors apologies for not adding the information to the picture page)
I have been searching for references to my family name on the internet and came across you website. In response to your request for details concerning the members of the choir photographed circa 1900, my grandmother, Lizzie Corkett(nee Gardner) is the sixth from the left in the third row from the front. She was married aged 24 to Arthur Corkett in December 1899. They had three children: Frederick Arthur born in October 1900, Annie Elizabeth born in May 1904 and Cecil Harry born in September 1910 (my father), who is third from the left on the back row of Jill Parson's photograph of Wing choir. He looks as if he is in early twenties. As I cannot see my grandmother on the photograph I presume that it was taken sometime after her death in June 1931 aged 55. My father subsequently trained as a priest and was vicar of Whitechapel church in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, from 1943 to 1980. He died in April 1998 aged 87. Regards Richard Corkett
Hello in Wing,
I am researching my family history in Wing in the 1500s to 1800s and have obtained copies of wills from this era.
Several of the wills note that the family lived in "The Milking Close" would you know if this place still exists or even where in Wing it would have been.
I am visiting Wing in March next year and would very much like to see this for myself.
Many thanks in anticipation.

Hi,
Just found your website and was thrilled at the information given. With my father I have been tracing our family tree who originate from Wing, I have some old photographs that you may be interested in.
Our family name is BOLTON who lived in Littleworth during the 1800’s. It was quite a large family and would be interested if anything is known about my great grand father and his family, Bernard William Bolton who was born in 1876.

Apparently Adrian Rickard who used to live in Wing, now in America typed "Wing" into the Google search engine to see what came out, and sent it to his brother Colin who in turn printed it out for his mother who lives in Wing. The pages were then shown to me by my Aunt, several "old village people" have shown great interest.

14 October 2004 Dear Villagers of Wing,
Re: Flt Lt Alfred Stewart Smith 104559 Date of birth 21 January 1914
On 1 January 2005 it will be sixty years since Flt Lt Alfred Stewart Smith was shot down in his Typhoon RB218 aircraft by the River Waal in Zaltbommel. He is the sole English military buried in the town graveyard and am pleased to say his grave is well tended and he is commemorated in the annual equivalent of Remembrance Sunday, Dodenherdenking on 4 May.
I know that he was born in Wing and enlisted in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve on 24 August 1940.He was commissioned as a Pilot Officer on 20 August 1941 and first promoted to Flying Officer on 20 August 1942 and finally to Flight Lieutenant on 20 August 1943. He served in 193 Squadron RAF Volunteer Reserve.
Not being a family member it is difficult for me to find any further information about him.I know he was married, his wife unfortunately died in 1988.Although the Royal Air Force Personnel Management Agency could not give me the last address of Mrs Smith they suggested I perhaps place an advertisement in the local newspapers in the Hove or Bedfordshire areas which I will do.Interestingly the RAF Benevolent Fund also suggested a link to Mrs Smith in the Hove area.
Being English myself, I would like to commemorate this anniversary.I have searched the town archives and found references to the event – even a pencil written declaration that his ID disc and papers were handed to "the authorities" and noted that the number was as above and that the identity card carried the Card Number 975274.This was presumably written on the day of the event which I found moving.I have spoken to a number of people who vividly remember the event.
Does anyone have any memories of a family Smith – not the easiest name I know! Can anyone suggest where else I could continue my search?Any help would be very much appreciated. Eileen Hendrie email Eileen.Hendrie@zonnet.nl Ravelijn 20 5301DM Zaltbommel The Netherlands
Dear Greg,
Yes, I'm sure it's the same Abel Fountaine. I have a list of eight of his children, gleaned from the 1891 and 1901 censuses (though of course there could have been others who died in infancy or who were born aftre 1901). Ernest is the sixth child on this list, and my grandmother Ethel is the eighth.
I'd be very interested to know more about the story of your family in the USA, and any info on the other siblings that you might have. My father knows nothing of his mother Ethel's brothers and sisters, so I'd love to be able to tell him more.
Do contact me at Seagrass44@aol.com if you'd like to. Lisa
Hello, I am trying to find out about a member of air crew that was based at Wing in feb 1943. I have as much information as possible. Could anyone point me in the direction of a local historian or anyone that may be able to help. Many thanks. Jim Tooke Jimanddianatooke@aol.com
Re Thelma's list - where we live in the houses behind Wantage House (corner of Vicarage lane) has been described to us variously as Estate Yard, Coal Yard & Timber yard (no-one has said Hart's to us yet) The old entrance is through the curved gateway that leads to 49 High Street, though which houses still have rights of access. Don't know truth - only what locals have said over the years. Yours Malcolm
Your great grand father Abel Fountaine was of Leighton Buzzard you say. I do believe my great great grand father is the same man. If this is the same man he had a son Ernest Fountain born 1895 who moved to the states and became a citizen in 1930. Who would be my great grand father. His wife was Jane Fountaine ( Major, her maiden name). There address in Leighton Buzzard was, 5 Summer Street Leighton Buzzard beds. If you believe this is the same Abel Fountaine please feel free to contact me with any questions, also if it is the same man I would like to ask you a few. Sincerely, Greg Taylor,Michigan U.S.A
Good day,
I am in the process of researching my ancestors and have stumbled upon your wonderful website whilst surfing the net.
I have evidence of my family from 1547 with the birth of children recorded in the parish to two brothers named Ralph and Robert Honour. There seemed to be a fairly well established family of Honours in the area from then until the 1800s and from copies of wills that I have they seemed to have been land owners.
I am coming over to visit family in the UK next year and would like to search around Wing for further information. Is there a map of the area available for the period of time between 1500 and 1900? One of the wills mentions “The Milking Close” and I would like to see if this still exists.
I would also like to check the registers for marriages and deaths from 1546, no doubt they are in the Aylesbury Library?

Hi there.
I'm wondering whether there's anyone in your society who can help me with my family history research.
My great-grandfather, Abel Fountaine, was born in Wing in 1861, to David and Ann (nee Syrett/Syratt). I believe their parents were probably William and Sarah Fountain and William and Charlotte Syratt, but that's as far as I've got.
I know of the family of John and Maria Syratt -- children named Emma, George, Moses, Reuben, Noah, Luke and Sarah Ann -- and guess that they must be related in some way to Ann Syratt.
Could anyone tell me what the relationship might be? I'd also be interested in any other information about the ancestry of the two families, although I know that Abel Fountaine moved up the road to Leighton Buzzard when he got married, and that his father David was christened in Mentmore, so the Fountaines are perhaps not as established in Wing as the Syratts seem to have been.
Thanks for your time. I look forward to hearing from you.

I am related to Julian Humphreys of Coventry, who has been in touch with you concerning his great grandfather James Syratt. James was the son of my great-great-Uncle Reuben Syratt of Burcott, Wing. At one time, during the l900s, Reuben was landlord of The Six Bells Public House, Burcott . Reuben died at Burcott in l9l5. I would very much like to obtain a photograph, if one exists, of The Six Bells, which was pulled down some years ago. Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.
My great-grandparents were John and Emma Newens of Wing. Emma was Emma Syratt before her marriage. The Newens were also a large family of Wing. My grandfather was William Thomas Newens. His sister Mary Jane married Frederick Redrup of Monks Risborough, brother to John Redrup, the Wheelwright, of Wing. His other sister, Caroline Elizabeth, left Wing sometime in the l880s to work in London. Both sisters, with their husbands and children, lived in Hammersmith, London. William Thomas and his wife Jane Foster, lived in various residences in Wing, including Glebe Farm on the Stewkeley Road, where my mother Helen Rose Laura was born. The family eventually moved to Sandy, in Bedfordshire. John Redrup and his wife and various offspring remained in Wing.
Many thanks. Davina Fennemore.

Hello there
Response to Thelma Shepherd's noticeboard request for place names.... there was an area of comon land and allotments around Burcott that my mother always referred to as "the Puzzle", can anyone confirm this or shed anymore light on exactly where that was?

Wing Airfield - a request for information
"I was wondering if it is at all possible to find out more information on RAF Wing during the war? I am looking to get hold of any pictures of the village then and the airfield, does anyone in the Village know who may have any old photos of the site, with RAF crew hanging around the local pub etc."

G'day my name is Winston hopton from Hervey Bay, Queensland,Australia. I am trying to obtain information about my great grandmother who was living at the SIX BELLS INN, Wing, Buckingham, according to the 1881 census. Try as I may, I have been unable to find anything on this Inn. Her name was Ann Gray, she married Berry Staples 3 August 1872 in Wing. My grandfather Francis Harry Gray, was born 17 December 1867 at Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, however the census shows a Harry Staples born to Berry and Ann about 1868, also at Leighton Buzzard . (before they married). Francis Harry emigrated to Australia in 1887 on the "Earl Granville", but the passenger list doesn't list a Francis. Francis Harry's birth certificate only shows his mother as Ann Gray. I haven't been able to find a record of death of Harry Staples in the UK, or a listing in the 1901 census, so it's more than likely that Harry Staples and Francis Harry Gray are one and the same person. I thought that someone there may have some recollections about the family. Any information on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Winston Hopton Any help? Please email wingit@talk21.com
Hello.I just looked at the website for Wing. There is mention of the Rowe family. I have been searching for the family of Joseph Rowe, born app. 1846, who married Mary Ann Brinklow, born app. 1846, at Eaton Bray. They were the parents of my grandmother Edith Alice Rowe. Please let me know if the people you mention might be in any way related. Thank you so much. Dodie Newman Kelowna, BC, Canada

I have been checking your website occasionally as I am interested in seeing other old photographs of Wing residents, I have attached one such picture from our collection for its similarity to the picture of Frank Corkett: this picture is also taken in Long Row Burcott, and shows Emily Syratt, Wife of James ... who were the parents of my Grandmother: Amy May Clarke. Looking at the two pictures it is hard to tell how much time seperates them, but the picture of Emily was taken shortly before 1935.
In the meantime, if you happen to know of anyone in the village with Syratt/Syrett connections or if anyone recognises any other detail about the picture please let me know, I can forward my contact details (besides the email address that is). I would be interested to know more about the "Jack Syratt" is in the picture of the workman if anyone identifies his connections.
Best wishes Julian Humphreys Coventry

My name is Dale Wing, I have a website http://www.wingfamilyhistory.com.
Greetings
I was interested to review your website and of course was wondering if you can advise why the village was called Wing. I am of Anglo-Saxon heritage and also wonder if the local church holds birth/death records etc as I have so far traced my ancestral lines back approx 160 years and am interested in exploring further. My great grandfather emigrated to Australia in the 1850's. Thanks in anticipation.

Pantling family
Dear Sir, I am researching for my father-in-law Alfred Smith's biography. He served in North Africa and Italy through 1942-1944 in the Queen's Royal Regiment with a fellow named Pantling (unsure of first name) who was wounded in Italy and returned to the UK. I noted your website mentioned the name Pantling and I was hoping he may be a relative. Could you provide the Pantling's e-mail or alternatively if you prefer forward this e-mail to them please? Regards Alan Thwaites Melbourne, Australia. Any help? Please email wingit@talk21.com
I am trying to trace details of a Charles Lamborn, a schoolmaster who wrote a history of Dunstable published in 1859.
Before he came to Dunstable he married (in 1844) Mary Woodman, who was the daughter of the schoolmaster at Wing.
After his wife's death, he married another lady from Wing, Price Maria Wyatt.
There's just a chance that if anyone has written a history of Wing school that the name of Lamborn might have been mentioned. I would be very grateful if you could point me in the direction of anyone who might know.

Hello, I am researching my SOUTHAM ancestors, like most other researchers I have hit the proverbial 'Brick Wall'. I am descended from a Thomas SOUTHAM who resided in Wing and raised a family there. I have not been able to find his marriage which would have been about 1673 to an Elizabeth - their first child baptised in Wing 4 Dec 1674. Thomas died in Wing on 11 May 1691, I have not been able to locate a Will. The records of all parishes adjacent to Wing have been searched. Your article regarding the Battle of Aylesbury at Holman's Bridge caught my eye; it caused me to think that perhaps Thomas was a soldier or the son of one of the soldiers engaged in the battle. The troops on both sides would have moved around the country quite a bit and some would have married during their travels. This then brings up the question of SETTLEMENT; an outlander would have required permission to reside in Wing - are there settlement orders for Wing? And, is there a parish chest? If you are able to help me solve this problem or even to point me in the right direction, I would be most grateful Any help? Please email wingit@talk21.com
